Character Creation Guide

Character creation is the first meaningful choice in Luminary — Refractive Entertainment’s solo or three-player online OpenZone ARPG-lite launching Steam Early Access on August 11, 2026 at $19.99 USD with regional pricing. The creator offers six distinct races, layered cosmetic sliders, and per-race camera framing built in Unreal Engine 5. Unlike traditional class-locked RPGs, Luminary does not bind race to weapon type: every hero can wield Sword and Shield, Bow, or Magic Glove from day one. This guide walks through each race silhouette, cosmetic depth, demo-tested controls that carry into Early Access, and how creation choices connect to combat habits in Weapons Overview and session flow in Getting Started.

The official character creation footage on this page shows the full UI loop — rotate, zoom, swap body presets, and confirm before entering the hub town. Treat creation as identity, not power: no race grants hidden stat bonuses that invalidate co-op roles from How Co-op Works.

Six races and what they communicate

Luminary ships six playable races at Early Access launch. Each race adjusts silhouette height, limb proportions, and default facial structure so your hero reads clearly in co-op camera shots and third-person combat. Refractive emphasizes readability over min-max race picking — pick the fantasy you want to inhabit for dozens of hours.

Taller races — Often frame Sword and Shield blocking animations with a wider shield arc visible to party members. Useful when you plan to anchor frontline co-op pulls.

Compact races — Dodge windows feel tighter on screen because the hitbox silhouette is smaller; many demo players report easier positional play with Bow strafing.

Varied facial and horn or ear presets — Purely cosmetic. They do not gate Arcanist skills or Chef recipe access.

Because weapon proficiency grows by use rather than creation choice, a race you love aesthetically beats a race you tolerate for imaginary combat math. Deep weapon behavior lives in Weapons Overview and Proficiency.

Cosmetics: sliders, presets, and naming

The creator separates body shape, skin tone, hair, facial features, and accessory layers. Presets offer fast starting points; sliders allow fine adjustment before you commit. Name your hero carefully — Early Access saves are persistent and co-op friends identify you by nameplate during drop-in sessions.

Demo patch 0.10.32.0071 refined several cosmetic camera angles so ear clips and shoulder armor intersections are less common at extreme slider values. If you played the Very Positive demo during the major June and July 2026 update, revisit the creator before Early Access — some preset IDs shifted between builds.

Hall of Heroes week-one naming runs through a Google form before August 11 — a separate tribute system from in-game character names. Read Hall of Heroes and Endgame if you want your real-world handle immortalized alongside narrative lore.

Per-race camera and creator UX

Each race adjusts the default creator camera distance and height so horns, wings, or tall crests stay in frame. Rotate with mouse or right stick; zoom to inspect clipping on capes and pauldrons before purchase-heavy Armorer upgrades later. The Unreal Engine 5 lighting in the creator matches hub town tone — skin and armor dyes you pick here remain consistent outdoors.

If you plan Steam Deck play, preview your race at medium camera distance; compact UI scales better on handheld. Full binding reference sits in the Controls Hub with pages for keyboard, controller, and Steam Deck layouts.

No class lock: weapons and roles

Luminary deliberately avoids class selection at creation. After confirming your hero, you receive starter access to all three weapon families:

  • Sword and Shield — Block, dodge, melee combos.
  • Bow — Draw, aim, ranged weak-point pressure.
  • Magic Glove — Light-based spell bursts and add control.

Swap mid-fight without menus. Specialization emerges from where you spend combat time, not from a creation screen checkbox. Co-op parties therefore avoid rigid trinity enforcement — a drop-in friend can arrive Bow-main even if you planned melee, as long as roles are communicated per How Co-op Works.

Race does not restrict vendor access. Blacksmith, Armorer, Arcanist, and Chef services apply equally to all heroes from Level Up and Town Vendors.

Demo controls that matter before you leave the creator

The demo patch documented several bindings that survive into Early Access character flow:

  • Shift — Dodge during creator-adjacent combat tutorials and all open-world fights.
  • Control — Walk toggle for precise positioning in camp stealth approaches.
  • F8 — HUD toggle to screenshot your hero or reduce UI clutter during exploration.

Rebind freely on PC through the Controls Hub. Controller players should mirror dodge on a shoulder button before first Tower attempts — muscle memory from creation tutorials is minimal, but hub combat dummies exist for practice.

Planning your first build without locking yourself in

Use creation time to decide fantasy, not spreadsheet:

  1. Pick race and cosmetics you enjoy in co-op screenshots.
  2. Enter hub, speak to all four vendors once per Getting Started.
  3. Trial each weapon on harmless targets near the gate.
  4. Note which weapon feels best with your chosen race silhouette — taller races often suit shield visibility; compact races suit Bow kiting.
  5. Commit first Blacksmith upgrade only after a full weapon trial loop.

Respec and gear flexibility are design goals compared to punishing ARPGs. If you regret cosmetic choices, check whether barber or mirror NPCs arrive in Early Access patches — Refractive has expanded demo UI iteratively.

Co-op and creation etiquette

When three-player online drop-in co-op is active, mixed-race parties are the default. Avoid pressuring friends to pick complementary races — coordination matters more than silhouettes. Hosts should wait at creator exit for guests joining fresh accounts; shared progression begins once everyone reaches the hub, detailed in Shared Progression.

Couch co-op is planned after Early Access launch but is not available August 11 — online co-op is the only group format at creation time.

Early Access pricing and demo carryover

Wishlist milestones on Steam can deepen launch-week discounts beyond the base ten percent — 100k wishlists unlock 12.5 percent, scaling to twenty percent at 250k per developer Steam news. The free demo teaches creation and combat loops; demo progress may reset when paid Early Access begins, but cosmetic taste and control bindings transfer mentally.

Once your hero exists, read Getting Started for first-hour town order, Weapons Overview for swap chains, and Combat Basics before elite camps. Character creation is the prologue — OpenZone Towers, Life Trees, and Tier difficulty await after you cross the hub gate.
